What is an X-Ray?

Understanding the technology behind X-ray imaging

An X-ray examination is a fast, safe, and effective way of producing images of the inside of your body. It's particularly useful for looking at bones, blood vessels, heart, and lungs.

How Does an X-Ray Work?

We use the term 'X-ray' to refer to the technology of producing X-ray images, but the rays themselves are actually a kind of electromagnetic radiation. They can't be seen by the naked eye, but they can be detected by the X-ray machine and turned into images.

Dense parts of your body such as bones appear white or light in the images, and softer parts - which the X-rays can pass through more easily - look darker. This contrast allows our specialist radiologists to identify problems and provide accurate diagnoses.

Find answers to common questions about X-ray scans

An X-ray is a quick, non-invasive procedure that uses electromagnetic radiation to produce images of the inside of your body. It's particularly effective for examining bones, blood vessels, heart, and lungs. The scan exposes your body to a small, safe dose of radiation to create detailed images.
The X-ray itself takes just a fraction of a second. However, positioning and preparation may take a few minutes. We ask you to arrive around 10 minutes before your appointment to ensure everything is in order. The entire visit typically takes 15-20 minutes.
You don't normally need any special preparation for an X-ray. You can eat, drink, and take medicines as normal before your appointment. Wear loose, comfortable clothing and avoid jewelry or clothes with metal parts (including zips), as we may need to ask you to remove these.
Yes, X-rays are very safe. While they use radiation, the body part being examined is only exposed to a low level for a fraction of a second. It's equivalent to a few days' worth of natural background radiation. The small risk is far outweighed by the diagnostic benefits.
X-rays are commonly used to diagnose fractured or broken bones, joint problems, breathing difficulties, chest pain, scoliosis (spine curvature), heart and lung disease, pneumonia, and other chronic conditions. They're an effective first-line diagnostic tool for many musculoskeletal and respiratory conditions.
You'll receive a detailed report from our specialist radiologists within three working days of your appointment. If you need immediate discussion of findings, we offer a free post-scan consultation to review your results and discuss next steps.
