Ostenil Injections

Ostenil is a treatment for the symptoms of osteoarthritis. It is a solution containing sodium hyaluronate (hyaluronic acid), a natural substance found in the body that lubricates and cushions joints. In osteoarthritis, the natural hyaluronic acid breaks down; Ostenil injections replenish this to improve joint function and reduce pain.

Ostenil works by restoring the balance between the breakdown and production of hyaluronic acid in the joint. It essentially "oils" the joint, improving shock absorption and lubrication. It also has a mild anti-inflammatory effect and forms a protective layer over pain receptors, reducing pain sensation.

Ostenil is typically used for a course of 3 injections given a week apart. Ostenil Plus is a more concentrated formulation containing mannitol (an antioxidant), designed to be a "one-shot" treatment, offering similar benefits with a single injection. For standard Ostenil, a course of 3 injections at weekly intervals is often recommended. For Ostenil Plus, a single injection is usually sufficient. The effects can last for 6-12 months, after which the treatment can be safely repeated.

The procedure causes minimal discomfort. We use local anesthetic to numb the skin and ultrasound guidance to ensure the needle enters the joint space smoothly and accurately. Most patients find it very tolerable.

Ostenil is very well tolerated because it is non-animal sourced and biocompatible. Secondary effects such as pain, heat, redness, and swelling at the injection site are rare and usually mild, lasting only a few days. Serious complications are extremely rare.

While some patients feel improvement within a few days, it typically takes 1-2 weeks to notice significant pain reduction and improved mobility. The benefits continue to build over the first month.

Yes, you can usually drive home, although for weight-bearing joints (knee/ankle/hip), having a driver is recommended as a precaution. You should avoid strenuous exercise for a few days but can continue with normal daily activities.
