Hip Injections in London
The hip joint sits deep beneath thick muscles, so injections without imaging can easily miss. At LSRI, Dr Prashant Sankaye, Consultant MSK Radiologist, uses live ultrasound to guide every hip injection accurately, after confirming the cause of your pain.
Hip conditions we treat with injections
- Hip osteoarthritis (pain usually felt in the groin)
- Hip bursitis and gluteal tendinopathy (pain on the outside of the hip)
- Iliopsoas bursitis and tendinopathy (pain at the front of the hip)
- Diagnostic injections, to find out whether pain is coming from inside the hip joint
Hip injection options
- Steroid (cortisone) injection: into the hip joint or the bursa, to reduce pain and inflammation.
- Hyaluronic acid injection: may be considered for selected patients with hip osteoarthritis. The evidence is mixed, and Dr Sankaye will discuss whether it is likely to help you.
- PRP (platelet-rich plasma): may be considered for longer-standing gluteal tendinopathy.
For outer hip pain, a targeted strengthening programme is the most effective long-term treatment, and injections work best alongside it.
How hip pain is diagnosed
Ultrasound shows the tendons, bursae and fluid around the hip. X-ray shows arthritis in the joint, and MRI shows the cartilage, labrum and bone in detail. Pain can also come from the lower back, which the assessment takes into account.

Frequently asked questions
How do I know if my pain is from the hip joint?
Pain from inside the hip joint is usually felt in the groin. Pain on the outside of the hip is more often from the tendons or bursa. A scan can tell them apart.
How long does a hip steroid injection last?
It varies from person to person. Many people get several weeks to a few months of relief.
Will I need a hip replacement?
Not necessarily. If your symptoms are severe and not improving, Dr Sankaye can advise when an orthopaedic surgeon’s opinion is worthwhile.
