At London Sports and Rheumatology Imaging (LSRI), the first step is always finding out exactly what is causing your pain. Dr Prashant Sankaye, Consultant MSK Radiologist, uses ultrasound, MRI and X-ray to make a clear diagnosis, and where treatment is right for you, performs injections under live ultrasound guidance so they reach exactly the right spot.

Knee

• Knee osteoarthritis: wear-and-tear arthritis of the knee, and the full range of injection options from steroid to hydrogel.
• Knee meniscal tear: a tear in one of the cartilage pads that cushion the knee, diagnosed with MRI.
• Patellar tendinopathy (jumper’s knee): pain in the tendon just below the kneecap.

Hip and thigh

• Hip osteoarthritis: thinning of the cartilage lining the hip joint, causing pain and stiffness.
• Hip bursitis (greater trochanteric pain syndrome): pain on the outside of the hip, often from the gluteal tendons as well as the bursa.
• Gluteal tendinopathy: a common cause of pain on the outer side of the hip.
• Hamstring injury: one of the most common muscle injuries in sport.

Shoulder

• Frozen shoulder: a painful, stiff shoulder, treated with ultrasound-guided hydrodistension.
• Shoulder impingement and subacromial bursitis: pain when lifting the arm, often linked to the rotator cuff.
• Rotator cuff tear: a tear in the tendons that move and steady the shoulder.
• Calcific tendinitis of the shoulder: calcium deposits in the rotator cuff tendons.

Elbow, wrist and hand

• Tennis elbow: pain on the outside of the elbow from the forearm tendons.
• Golfer’s elbow: pain on the inner side of the elbow.
• Carpal tunnel syndrome: tingling and numbness in the hand from a squeezed nerve at the wrist.
• Trigger finger: a finger or thumb that catches or locks when you bend it.
• De Quervain’s tenosynovitis: painful tendons on the thumb side of the wrist.

Foot and ankle

• Plantar fasciitis: heel pain, often worst with the first steps in the morning.
• Achilles tendinopathy: pain and stiffness in the Achilles tendon above the heel.
• Morton’s neuroma: a painful, thickened nerve between the toes, often felt in the ball of the foot.

Inflammatory arthritis

• Rheumatoid arthritis imaging: ultrasound, MRI and X-ray to support diagnosis and monitoring, working with your rheumatologist.
