What a shoulder MRI shows

Rotator cuff tears, partial or full-thickness, and any muscle wasting
Labral tears, including SLAP tears and Bankart lesions after a dislocation (small tears may need an MR arthrogram)
Signs that support frozen shoulder, such as a thickened joint capsule
Cartilage damage, arthritis and avascular necrosis
Subacromial bursitis and biceps tendon problems
Bone bruising and fractures

Should I have an MRI or an ultrasound of my shoulder?

Ultrasound shows the rotator cuff and bursa moving in real time, and can guide an injection at the same visit. MRI shows deeper structures such as the labrum, cartilage and bone marrow. Many patients need only one of them; we'll advise which.
