What we scan
Musculoskeletal (MSK) ultrasound shows muscles, tendons, ligaments, joints and soft tissues in real time, so the part being examined can be seen while it moves. Common areas we scan include:

What to expect
- Before your scanMost MSK scans need no preparation. Wear loose clothing so the area can be reached easily, and bring any previous scan reports or referral letters.
- During the scanYour scan is performed by Dr Prashant Sankaye, Consultant MSK Radiologist. A small amount of gel is put on the skin and a hand-held probe is moved over the area. You may be asked to move the joint so it can be seen in action.
- How long it takesMost scans take 15–30 minutes. Ultrasound uses sound waves, not radiation.
- AfterwardsYou will get immediate feedback during the scan and can return to normal activities straight away.
Your report
Your scan is reported by Dr Sankaye. A detailed written report is typically available within 24 hours, and you can share it with your GP, physiotherapist or consultant.
Once Dr Sankaye has reported your scan, you can book a free 5-minute video consultation to go through the results. If an ultrasound-guided injection is appropriate, it can often be carried out at the same visit — see our ultrasound-guided injections.

If your scan shows that an ultrasound-guided injection is appropriate, Dr Sankaye will discuss it with you. In many cases the scan, report and guided injection can be done in one visit.
