Frequently asked questions

How much does a private knee MRI cost?

A knee MRI at LSRI costs from £375. That includes the scan, a report from a consultant radiologist within 24 hours and your digital images. A knee MRI with a consultation, to go through the findings and next steps, is from £425.

How long does a knee MRI take?

Usually 20 to 30 minutes. You lie still on your back with your knee in a padded coil. The scan is painless and uses no X-rays.

Do I need a GP referral?

Not if you are paying for yourself. Our team checks every request to make sure the scan suits your symptoms. If you are claiming on health insurance, your insurer may ask for a referral first.

How quickly will I get my results?

A consultant musculoskeletal radiologist reports your scan within 24 hours. If you would like to go through the results and next steps, choose MRI with a consultation, from £425.

Should I have an MRI or an ultrasound of my knee?

MRI shows the inside of the knee: the menisci, cruciate ligaments, cartilage and bone. Ultrasound is good for tendons, fluid and structures near the surface, but cannot see deep inside the joint. If you are not sure which you need, call us and we'll advise.

I'm claustrophobic. Can I still have a knee MRI?

Tell us when you book. For a knee scan your head can often stay outside the scanner, and open MRI is available at some partner centres (lower image quality, from £375).
